Why journalism matters more than ever

A reading list

Whether it is examining Conservative leadership contender Kellie Leitch’s proposals for screening immigrants, covering refugee movements or fact-checking the U.S. president, journalism is more important than ever in a world where populism, extremism and distrust of the news seems to be increasing. To foster debate and a better understanding of what is happening and why, faculty members at the Ryerson School of Journalism have selected a variety of readings that touch on issues ranging from the rise of populism to the fake news phenomenon. The list also includes readings on why journalists need to stand their ground – and strategies for how to go about doing that.
